My doctor recently made a case for me to try a gluten free diet.I tested negative for celiac but she thinks I have a gluten sensitivity nonetheless. The idea of changing to gluten free seemed daunting and I resisted the attempt until I started reading this excellent book by Susanne Bowland.Bowland has thoroughly researched the topic of gluten free living and presents a wide variety of indpeth information in a well organized easy to read book. She cites resources galore and the index is extremely helpful as well.Bowland makes an effective and convincing case that, going gluten free is about the abundance of new foods (as well as medicines & cosmetics) to try rather than about denial.Like many things in life, success is predicated on attitude. My own experience validates Bowland's statement that if you feel much better, then sticking to a gluten free diet is not very difficult to do - especially with the help of this book!Beyond opening the reader's horizons to new taste treats, Bowland also provides useful nutritional information as well as hints on successful food preparation, baking, and dining out. This book is a FANTASTIC resource, a kind of "bible" for gluten free living.Bowland knows what she is talking about.

Grain-free Gourmet Delicious Recipes for Healthy Living Review

Grain-free Gourmet Delicious Recipes for Healthy Living
Average Reviews:

I have this cookbook as well as Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook, and Eat Well Feel Well. This one is my favorite. I love "The World's Best Meat Sauce", which I make thick as recommended for a sloppy joe spooned over the "Basic Bread" recipe. Fantastic! The apple galette disappeared immediately among a group of non-SCD dieters. I also like the cole slaw, and the cappuccino ice cream is fabulous!

I also have Eat Well Feel Well, but find the recipes are expensive and require ingredients not typical even in the SCD kitchen. Since the SCD can be expensive on its own, I have found that I've used that book very rarely. With the exception of nut flours and standard SCD staples, most ingredients used in Grain Free Gourment are reasonably priced and easily located in your neighborhood supermarket. The recipes even include the standard rather than SCD ingredients, so this book will remain a favorite even if strict adherence to SCD is no longer necessary. Thank you Jodi and Jenny for quality recipes that are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and sure to please even non-SCDers. This is a lovely cookbook with beautiful photos. It would be a welcome addition in every SCD kitchen.

Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition Review

Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition

Successfully following a gluten-free (GF) diet involves much more than just avoiding gluten. It is about getting optimal nutrition from healthful foods. And it is not all about GF breads and cookies, it's about eating a bounty of whole foods and incorporating healthful whole GF grains, using them in ways that maximize their nutritional benefits.

As a registered dietitian, I refer to Gluten Free Diet on a regular basis; I trust that the information is research-based, backed with science, and 100% reliable. It is the number-one resource on GF diets / GF living for myself and for my clients.

Shelley Case, a registered dietitian who herself follows the GF diet, is an international expert on celiac disease and the GF diet. The book not only covers the GF diet in detail, but common medical questions and issues that arise among folks suffering from celiac disease, or wondering if they might have it. From everyday concerns to more remote issues, all topics are covered in an easy-to-understand prose, complete with useful tables, appendices, and easy recipes.

The book gets updated regularly, so is up to speed on the more controversial issues such as oats (are they GF or not?), hidden sources of gluten in the diet, cross-contamination issues, limiting nutrients and where to find them, whether a "dedicated facility" is important or not and other labeling issues, and great resources for anyone needing support and information on going GF. One of the best sections of the book is Case's well-researched list of GF manufacturers/brands, bakeries, stores, distributors, and web-sites.

If you've been diagnosed with celiac disease orwant to follow a gluten-free diet for any other reason, this is the only book you'll need.

I was pleasantly surprised that the book goes far beyond gluten-free cooking tips and recipes.I have read Korn's other 3 books, and all have been tremendously helpful, and even inspiring. The gluten-free diet can be a shocker (give up your beer, your bread, your tasty baked treats, etc.), but the author somehow makes it easy to understand the nuances of this tricky diet. You feel like you are getting one-on-one expert advice in an easygoing, relaxed style. It's weird, but you feel like you know the author after reading the book. The book is even funny.

For anyone starting out on a gluten-free diet, any of Korn's books are winners. If you also like to cook, this is a double dose of education. You will probably refer to it often.Highly recommended on all counts.

I think this is a wonderful cookbook.Going gluten-free can seem like a daunting task, especially when young children are involved, but Ms. Davis makes it simple and most importantly: TASTY!I really like that there aren't THOUSANDS of recipes to wade through or strange, hard-to-find ingredients. The author states that these are her and her children's very favorite recipes in the world.Turn to any page and you have a meal or dessert to try right away. The book gives you many kid approved recipes in several categories. Both the UNflour mix and the soup mixes are essential for any busy cook to have on hand in order to whip up casseroles and other meals quickly. The pages are attractive and uncluttered and the recipe directions are simple and easy to follow.

This book is a great first book for gluten-free initiates. I've been eating a gluten-free diet for about a year now--reading tons of literature on the subject--so most of this book was a review for me. However, there were some gems about certain nutrients that I may lack and creative ways to add them to my diet. The recipes were also helpful and quick to make, unlike many other gluten-free recipe books where you have to have custom flour blends on hand to make anything.

Delicious! The Very Best of Gluten Free & Wheat Free Cooking; a home style recipe collection for celiacs & wheat sensitive folks Review

Delicious The Very Best of Gluten Free & Wheat Free Cooking; a home style recipe collection for celiacs & wheat sensitive folks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are now a lot of cookbooks for celiacs in the marketplace. I own many of them, but at times I feel that you need to have been a home economics major to decipher some of the complexities of the recipes. I found this one to be different... and actually more fun to use.

I thought that this author uses more creativity in her selection of recipes as well as in some of the ingredients that she is using. Some of my personal favorites are: Easy chili rellenos casserole, creamy curried chicken casserole, tomato pie, pigs in a poncho, bacon-honey mustard chicken, mulligatawny soup, Mexican albondigas soup, quick and easy griddle muffin bread, parmesan-thyme focaccia, Lou Ann's fruit pie squares, apple cream pie, and Diane's strawberry shortcake cheesecake.

A newly diagnosed gluten intolerant or wheat allergic person is already feeling overwhelmed, especially when they are required to find many ingredients that are somewhat unusual and often hard to come by. This just makes the learning to cook GF more stressful than it needs to be. While, of course, some GF flour blend recipes are mentioned in this cookbook, there are plenty of recipes that will not require the flours, so I could "hit the ground running" and I found some dishes that I could cook up right away without having a chemist's degree....or without many of the flours on hand. The directions were very easy to understand, based on ingredients available in the "real world". The recipes that I have tried taste normal, my family enjoys them and my friends actually look forward to seeing what I am making next from this interesting cookbook.

This is probably a good cookbook for newbies and also for those with wheat allergies, too. Seems like a cookbook to bridge the gap between both of those needs. I have given this cookbook as a gift to friends who were wheat sensitive and they were also very happy to finally have an easy yet interesting wheat free cookbook.

Oh, by the way, I also really liked the "homespun" look of this cookbook and LOVED the fact that it has a comb binding and opens flat and is very easy to use. It's really a great little cookbook overall, and I do highly recommend it!

Bette has done her usual great job at describing Celiac Sprue, Gluten freeliving, using gluten free ingredients and baking and cooking with thischallenging diet.
In this book Bette shows how to make up"mixes" for we who are gluten challenged. For example sheexplains cake and bread flour mixes, my two favorites, that can be made upin large quantities, mixed very well and stored for later use. This makesit as convenient to bake a gluten free cake, as it is to make one from oneof those boxes from the grocery-baking aisle. There are many other mixes.(I counted 36.) One of my favorite everyday mixes is Onion Soup. I use itwhen cooking meats and stews. This one alone has saved my day when thechildren's activities take up all my time and energy and I just could nothave sliced and diced and browned and simmered, etc, to get the onion basefor the gravy just right.
Bette supplies recipes for lots of the hard tofind things like Sweet and Sour sauce, Sweet Pickle relish, low-fatdressing and lots more. She also explains some very helpful substitutionslike things to use in baking if you have lactose intolerance and Sprue (andthe taste doesn't overwhelm in the final product).
Just seeing how Bettecreates her mixes and uses them in her recipes is a great education. Onceyou start using this book you probably will get the courage to try out yourown mixes or vary Bette's until it meets with your palates delight.
Herrecipes are easy to use. She explains the directions well. The end productis delightful.
I love this book and refer to it often even when I am notusing it to bake. I take it to the grocery store to use as a reference.

What a perfect addition to my low carb library!! Baking Low Carb was superb, but Bread and Breakfast by Diana Lee is simply the best low carb bread (and more!) cookbook I have ever seen!! It includes chapters packed full of recipes for yeast breads and rolls, quick breads, and "other" breakfast options (as well as eggs) like pancakes, waffles, custards, french toast, cereals, toppings and fillings!!! A Low Carbers DREAM!! It also includes directions to make low carb specialty coffee drinks like Cappuccino, Mocha, Latte, etc. Diana starts off with an easy to read "Before you begin" section which explains in simple english, the differences in low carb baking to regular baking, the ingredients and WHY you need certain things to be successful with recipes. She give in depth instructions on where to find ingredients with several options, and describes her ingredients perfectly so you KNOW what to buy. She includes a page of low carb baking tips, and page of recipe substitutions, as well as measurement, substitution equivalencies and even two pages on folding fancy napkins. NO low carber should be without this book! We love it at my house.

Gluten-free for a Healthy Life Review

(Gluten-Free For A Healthy Life, by Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD, LD)
The very best reason to have a copy of this book is that it provides you with pages and pages of the names of the
foods and "additives" that a gluten-intolerant person may and may not eat! I've kept mine on the kitchen counter for
constant reference during the last several months. Who would put so much wheat gluten in every processed food?
Well, they all do! (manufacturers) And, until you figure out that you're just not eating much of anything from a jar,
can, bag, or box in the future, this book is helpful in spelling it out.
It takes so much time and energy to call each of the manufacturers of your own favorite food products, concerning
their gluten-free status, that at some point, even the joy of being a nuisance (to them) wears thin. And, even after
calling, you need to question whether the food and drug companies really understand the depth of the problem,
concerning contamination from wheat gluten. (They may not.)
I just reread the first few chapters of this book, so I could decide if my relatives should read it, too. I realized that
it has a very concise, informative overview of the disease. It's a perfect introduction to the underlying causes of suffering and illness from Celiac disease, as well as explaining the need to adhere to a totally gluten-free diet. Therefore, this book may be the easiest way to help family members and friends understand it, too.
This is definitely a reference-quality book, that should be included in your quest for Celiac information.

Just as valuable as the recipes are her comments about her experiences and the good humor she brings to daily life as a celiac. She shares just the right balance of honesty and encouragement. The explanations at the front of the book about celiac desease, do's and don'ts, references, etc. are good for synthesizing what I already knew and for sharing with friends and family so they can understand too.Great cookbook!

The Aia Gluten and Dairy Free Cook Book Review

The Aia Gluten and Dairy Free Cook Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is basically a collation of user-submitted recipes from a British web forum on the GFCF diet. There are definitely a few useful recipes in there, but they're not consistent--half use American measurements (cups and Tablespoons) and half use British (grams and ounces.) It's not impossible to convert the measurements yourself to whichever one you need, but it is an added step. In addition, there seems to have been very little thought given to culling and selecting the best recipes from the group. There are, for example, three separate "goulash" recipes which vary their measurements and ingredients a bit, but are certainly not different enough to consider each one a new dish. It leads one to believe they were either looking to fill pages or didn't want to offend anyone in this group effort. And, as with most gluten-free cookbooks, there is a large imbalance towards recipes for baked goods. These are important to know how to make, certainly, but this book will not answer the question "what can I serve for dinner?" nearly as well as some of the other GFCF cookbooks available. There is some redemption to be found in the candy-making section of the book, as well as the non-food-items section, both of which provide recipes that cannot easily be found elsewhere, but overall I would say the book is overpriced for the content it provides.

The Gluten-Free Good Health Cookbook: The Delicious Way to Strengthen Your Immune System and Neutralize Inflammation Review

The Gluten-Free Good Health Cookbook: The Delicious Way to Strengthen Your Immune System and Neutralize Inflammation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book to use as a cookbook, largely on the basis of my good experiences with annalise roberts' other books, which concentrate on gluten free baking (and, to a lesser extent, gluten free versions of common gluten-containing staples like fresh pasta). You won't find recipes for such foods in this book-- recipe wise, this book has only a small handful of baking recipes and largely contains recipes for things like clam chowder, roasted asparagus and shrimp curry. Given Annalise Roberts particular baking expertise (and the blurb on the cover touting that this book is "from the author of the bestselling gluten free baking classics") this is very disappointing. Also, I believe most people looking for gluten free cookbooks are interested in the kinds of recipes that would normally contain wheat (like bread, pasta, cookies, etc..), because these are the foods that become unavailable when a gluten free diet is required. Most people are already going to be comfortable with non-gluten containing cooking for things like salad, soup, and fish, and have lots of such recipes from their pre-celiac days. I think of a gluten free cookbook stocked almost exclusively with these kinds of recipes as 'cheating.'

I also have some more idiosyncratic problems with the recipes-- most feature meat, fish, and other animal products.I am a vegetarian, and I found very few recipes I could make. Also, most of the vegetable recipes are very basic and will be incredibly familiar to anyone with basic cooking knowledge, vegetarian or carnivore (roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach with garlic, baby greens with balsamic vinaigrette). More generally, I'm a bit skeptical of this supposedly novel, all purpose healthy 'diet' that, aside from its wheatlessness, reads a lot like a standard american diet where vegetable based preparations are largely relegated to the 50's-sounding chapter "vegetables and side dishes."Another irritation that probably won't bother most readers: over half of the (meagre 8) dessert recipe contain tofu, which I am allergic to.Overall, therefore, the recipes were not what I what I was expecting and are just not ones I can use, though others with fewer dietary restrictions may have a better experience.

In fairness, this book seems as much intended to be a self-help nutrition/diet book as a cookbook, though also on this score I find it lacking.I have noticed a bizarre tendency to vilify wheat amongst celiac authors, which these authors take to an extreme, billing a gluten free diet as best for everyone's health.Obviously, wheat is toxic for those with celiac disease or wheat allergies. And, as the authors point out, no doubt the average american eats way too much highly refined what flour and would benefit from cutting back. They rightly emphasize the nutritional benefits of a 'whole foods' diet, but does that mean everyone should stop eating any wheat, barley or rye altogether, even whole grain versions?Obviously not. While they provide some additional references to suggest problems with a heavily wheat based diet, I don't find the scientific evidence they cite remotely sufficient to support their general claim that eating any gluten containing grains cause problematic inflammation and would best be avoided by everyone. And the tone of some of the text sometimes has a junk science quality with dubious, ambiguous self-help buzzwords like "detoxify,"which made me even more skeptical of their claims.

The Gluten Connection is by far the most important book I have ever read.If you are gluten sensitive, it will change your life; if you are not, it will apply to someone you know. The message gets through that 30% of the population is sensitive to gluten and that the smallest amount of it results in symptoms. In my case, after 3 days of gluten-free existence, the allergies that have plagued me for 30 years disappeared entirely and the muscle tightness that has made me miserable lately was gone as well.I will be eternally grateful to the author for writing this book.Susan Hildebran

Product Description:
One of the nation's top clinical nutritionists presents her 14-day program for treating and reversing gluten sensitivity, a condition that affects as much as 35 to 50 percent of the U.S. population and is a major contributing factor to an array of chronic illnesses

Struggling with weight gain? Plagued by fatigue? Suffering from joint pain? According to preeminent clinical nutritionist Dr. Shari Lieberman, these symptoms are among the hallmarks of a little-known but surprisingly common sensitivity to gluten, a protein in certain grains. Dr. Lieberman has been investigating gluten sensitivity for more than 20 years. In her experience, eliminating gluten can alleviate many troubling symptoms for which doctors often can't find a cause, as well as chronic conditions for which mainstream medicine offers little hope of relief--including rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and irritable bowel syndrome.

In fact, 85 percent of Dr. Lieberman's clients who follow a gluten-free diet report dramatic improvement in their health--and scientific studies support her results.

In The Gluten Connection, Dr. Lieberman presents a simple questionnaire to help readers assess their risk for gluten sensitivity and provides a 14-day eating plan to start them on the path to improved health and vitality. She also recommends nutritional supplements to support and maximize the therapeutic potential of a gluten-free diet.
