"Vegetables: nature's own health insurance - no other foods provide so much protection against heart disease, skin disorders, cancer, and high blood pressure, and give the body all-around vitality." ~ pg. 198

In SuperFoods you will find information on how to lower cholesterol by eating apples, why figs can help prevent cancer and how members of the squash family can help to keep your lungs healthy.

Each Super Food is featured on its own page (sometimes two) and is shown in full-color pictures.

This cookbook is divided into three main sections:

The Superfoods
The Recipes
Protect Your Health

Some of the food featured include blueberries, mangoes, melon, kiwifruit, asparagus, onions, sweet potatoes and celery. Nuts, seeds, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, poultry, herbs, spices and miscellaneous items like chocolate, tea and coffee are discussed in detail.

Each recipe features an illness the foods help to cure. Like the Pumpkin soup helps with digestive, respiratory and skin issues. An Avocado, walnut and pear salad can help with fatigue.

A few examples of the delicious recipes include:

Banana and Almond Muffins
Green Tea Bread
Spicy Winter Bread Pudding
Red Plums with Brandy
Linden-apple Tea
Ginger Punch
Tagliatella with Artichokes
Asparagus Citronette
Spiced Peaches

"It is no longer possible to doubt that there is a direct link between diet and cancer." ~ pg. 264

In the last section, menus are given for various health conditions. You can find information regarding: cancer, circulatory problems, digestive problems, stress, fatigue, joint problems, respiratory problems, skin problems, urinary problems and weight control. This book also has some fun ideas, like reading the "Ten Commandments for the Overweight" gives you permission not to eat everything on your plate (see page 333). A good page to photocopy for relatives who insist on feeding you seconds, thirds, etc.

The first section on the specific foods is an educational and fun read. Seeing all the delicious foods in full-color pictures makes you hungry for something healthy. The recipes are uncomplicated and this book is perfect for anyone who loves to cook or wants to make excellent food choices from any menu.

This book is packed with nutritional information, and would , make a great gift for a novice or skilled chef who wants to eat very well.
I love the recipe creators: you have lists of ingredients, pick items from each column, and then end up with all sorts of terrific variations. It covers every food group, has a pantry section at the back so you can make your own salsas, dressings, dips and so on really easily and healthfully, and gives you all your RDAs too.
The how-to and shopping sections are also superb. This book would also go really well with the same authors' Wellness Foods A to Z. It is a complete guide to food and nutrition which everyone interested in health should own. Together the two books make a perfect healthy eating library.

Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too: Eating to Be Sexy, Fit, and Fabulous! Review

Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too: Eating to Be Sexy, Fit, and Fabulous
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Co-owner and chef of Primo restaurant in Rockland Maine, Melissa Kelly enthusiastically espouses the Mediterranean lifestyle in her new book, "Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too", an obvious take-off of the mega bestseller, "French Women Don't Get Fat" by Mireille Giuliano.Rather than focusing on the epicure wonders of one country, Kelly shoots for the melting-pot American approach of multiculturalism and sails the wine-dark sea in search of a metaphorically food-loving Ithaca.

Unlike Giuliano's vignette-styled success, Kelly takes a foodie's approach:food snobbery and sheer gastronomical delight reign supreme tempered with gluttonless slow eating and small portion sizes. Her best tip?Special treats like a scoop of gelato shouldn't be eaten every day, but when one indulges the three-bite rule should be enforced; delight in only three bites and then stop before excess rules over commonsense.

Kelly's book cruises along tracking other `real food' diet/lifestyle road maps like the "Sonoma" and "Fat Fallacy" regimes. If there is a difference its intaglio is the wealth of recipes that Kelly includes from seasonal staple dishes from menus of her famous restaurant composed of fresh ingredients facilitated by Primo's own vegetable and herb gardens. After explaining her Italian-American rearing on Long Island (you go girl---I am also an Italian American from Old Bethpage), she divides the book into familiar components---forgive my explanatory license here.Topics like `high flavor', `variety', `olive oil', `the market and garden', `tapas portions', `whole grain', `meat control', `eating at the family table', `water and wine', `eating little but eating well',`heart healthy', `living a small rural life', provide a glimmer into the svelte world of the archetypical Mediterranean woman with the addition of health factoids and individual stories that are geared to launch the convenience driven American mindset into a landscape resplendent with a cornucopia of good choices and the breathing room to utterly enjoy and savor the options.

Although not your typical diet book replete with dietary dos and don'ts, Kelly does round out her information with a nuts and bolts chapter that answers the obvious questions of how? how much? and when? with a seven day-menu planner that controls portions, includes the wholesome foods discussed in the previous chapters and adds a little meat for a little excitement.

Along with this, she plugs the idea of balance and contentment which seems to embody the Mediterranean woman and calls to mind that relaxed feeling that one gets even after a short two week trip abroad.Even though she admits that life in America seems very far away from life in the Mediterranean, she asserts that she "almost [has] it right" bolstering her opinion with Charlotte Cushman's words "To try to be better is to be better."

Kelly's chatty style reflects the ease she employs to welcome us into her quasi-Mediterranean world. At times her enthusiasm runs amok and she falls into the same annoying foreign language usage utilized by Mireille Giuliano in FWDGF.Overtly, Mireille shamelessly uses her `French-ness' to charm her super-sized American audience; sadly Kelly's pseudo sophistication runs the foreign phrase gamut using too-cutesy italicized comments from Gibraltar to Lebanon that annoy rather than instruct and detract from otherwise good information.

Bottom line? While Melissa Kelly's all-American pluralistic approach in "Mediterranean Women Stay Slim, Too" works well on the level of providing good information and interesting recipes, it seems that the current marketplace is saturated with so many books advocating real food and slow eating that they all seem to cover the same ground. Under the guise of learning the newest need-to-know slenderizing secrets of different cultures, we learn only a few simple facts:Eat well, eat slowly and enjoy life.Recommended to those who would appreciate some staple Mediterranean recipes.

New Good Food, rev: Essential Ingredients for Cooking and Eating Well Review

New Good Food, rev: Essential Ingredients for Cooking and Eating Well
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Taking a quick flip through this book has one thinking that the volume is encyclopedic and loaded with good information about ingredients. Unfortunately, the depth of information is very shallow and, in some cases, of unclear value.

As background, I have a good sized bookshelf filled with cookbooks and tend to prefer those that discuss authentic ingredients and techniques over the "quick and easy" type. If I'm looking for information on ethnic ingredients, the source should stand up to content in texts like "Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art" (Tsuji), "The Modern Art of Chinese Cooking" (Tropp), or "Classic Indian Cooking" (Sahni).

"New Good Food" often has little more than a paragraph of general information on each ingredient, with the focus seeming to be on why a food store like Whole Foods would select it for its claimed health benefits, rather than providing significant culinary or cultural depth.

There is some substitution information (e.g., sweeteners) and cooking information (e.g., grains and legumes), but its accessibility and depth ("Cut in half or in wedges and steam, or bake with a splash of oil, a favorite seasoning, and salt or tamari.") is not enough to make this book a "go to" for me.

Some of the discussions about what the food terms, such as "organic" and "free range" mean, might be of value to some, but that information is widely available elsewhere.

In some cases, the information is questionable. For example, the section on cooking by color identifies potatoes in the "yellow or orange" group or the "red" group according to their skin color, though the skin is generally not eaten and does not contain the carotenoids at the levels associated with eating "orange" vegetables. It further lists eggplant as a valuable "blue or purple" vegetable, though eggplant has very little value other than a little dietary starch.

"New Good Food" also falls into the trap of "natural is good" on occasion as well. After dismissing all "artificial, nonnutritive sweeteners" (which I generally would agree with), the virtues of Stevia are extolled, because it is a "natural, plant-based substance," even though the "human body can't completely metabolize [Stevia-based sweeteners]." Conium maculatum is a common herb, which produces a "natural, plant-based substance" known as "deadly hemlock." I'm not suggesting that Stevia is poisonous. However, I am aware that it is recommended against for people with liver conditions, probably because of the load its non-nutritive, non-metabolizable chemicals, naturally occurring or not, put on that organ.

With two vegetarians in our family, along with allergy to soy and soy products, I was hoping for a reference on some of the less common ingredients available at market today to complement my current "go to" general reference cookbooks. "New Good Food" isn't about to find a place next to, for example, Cooks Illustrated "The [New] Best Recipe" or many of the excellent CIA series, such as "Techniques of Healthy Cooking, Professional Edition"

This book is packed with information, and confirms what I always felt to be true about nutrition. There aren't alot of recipies, which only reflects on the simplicity of the Mediterranean style of eating.I have dozens of cookbooks, I really didn't need another one. With this book, I was inspired to use all of the fresh produce that I already enjoyed, but in a simpler and healthier way.I was also able to release any guilt about using whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, just because it was a carb, or just because it was a fat.It really makes sense to me.Keep it simple.Leave out the processing.

The Glycemic Index Diet For Dummies Review

The Glycemic Index Diet For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow. What a great read. For some background information, I am a registered dietitian and was taught that for the most part, calories in vs. calories out was the way to lose weight. I had been trying this for many years, and was unsuccessful with weight loss. Last year, I was diagnosed with PCOS, which basically stems from being insulin resistant, making it harder for me to maintain a healthy weight. At the beginning of this year, and subsequently my last year in my 20's, I knew I needed to make a change in my health to prevent diabetes and other health concerns and this would be the year to do it.

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. The information is clear and easy to understand, and the book is a fun read with lots of humor. I couldn't believe how much I didn't know about the glycemic index/load and how different foods affect blood sugar differently. I had always assumed that as long as I kept my calories under goal, I would maintain my weight. This book taught me that the types of foods really do matter, but also, that nothing is off limits. I changed my thinking and way of eating. Now, I try to indulge in sweets and higher glycemic items as a treat vs. a daily habit.

I've also experimented with diffferent foods, mainly vegetables and grains that I would have never used. And much to my surprise, I love the taste of bulgur instead of rice, and quinoa as a grain. The recipes in the book are delicious and stuff I would actually make, unlike lots of other nutrition books with not-so-appetizing recipes. And hey, I don't miss those 25 extra pounds I was carrying around either.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to feel their best and take charge of their health.

Sugar-Free Toddlers: Over 100 Recipes Plus Sugar Ratings for Store-Bought Foods

I almost wasn't interested in this book because the title made me think that this book would have bland and boring recipes. But after flipping through it I saw lots of things that sounded good to try.And almost every recipe so far has been a huge hit with my 18 month old son. This is amazing to me because I thought he was picky. I guess I just wasn't giving him the kind of foods he likes. This book is, as other critics have noted, NOT sugar free.Fruit juice is a sugar. But I do not consider this a drawback because I think that people who don't eat any sugar of any kind are kidding themselves. The key is to use healthy forms of sugar and not too much. The main reason I was anxious to try these recipes is that nearly all of them use whole-wheat flour or some other whole grain flour and I am a big believer in using whole grains. So nutritious and full of fiber.Best recipes so far that I can highly recommend: Orange-date snack cake, Pilgrim pancakes, and Toddler date bread stix. The Coconut Pineapple cookies, however, were not very good. They were not even remotely sweet enough and were more like a pancake than a cookie. But I heated them up and buttered them and my son ate them for breakfast! So really, what it comes down to is that toddlers DO like these recipes. My son prefers them over the white flour, preservative laced stuff from the store. You can't protect your kids from sugar their whole lives, so give them a healthy alternative.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.

Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

The GL Diet For Dummies Review

The GL Diet For Dummies

I bought this book and "The Big GL + Diet Planner" by Fiona Hunter so I could start getting all the nutrition I possibly can from my food without feeling like I'm missing out on something, and without feeling guilty when eating some of my favorite foods. This diet helps level out your blood sugar levels which if unstable, can cause plenty of ailments-diabetes ofcourse being one of them-but can also cause mood swings and hunger cravings for more of the sugary, high-carb food you just ate!

This diet is more of a "slow" carb diet. The carbs that you eat are more slowly digested and so they sustain energy much longer and your body still has something to restock up on glucose in the muscle. (ok if my science is off a bit, just read the book:)

overall this is a great diet. For those who are on a low-carb diet, beware-this book does have a few places where it talks quite poorly of the Atkins diet, but it does also mention that without the Atkins thought on carbohydrates, nutritionists may have taken a bit longer to getting around to seeing the real effect carbs have on our blood sugar levels and health overall.

simple diet. easy to follow. anyone can do it.

Feeding the Whole Family: Cooking with Whole Foods

I have the first edition of this cookbook and it rates up there with my 5 most used cookbooks. I have bought multiple copies and given them as gifts to friends and family members. I cook primarily whole foods for my family, which in common terms means that I cook from scratch about 18-20 of our 21 weekly meals. Many of these recipes can be made quickly (30 minutes) with some planning.

The author gives wonderful advice for cooking beans, basic recipes for various grains and family favorite sauces. Most of the soup recipes are staples in our house. The introduction of 'new' and different grains...millet, quinoa, buckwheat...is a great way to add variety to your family's diet and most are quick and easy to make. Our culture eats far too much wheat and making some wheat-free meals is a welcome change in most families.

If I had just 1 box of books I could keep, this would be one of the books I would be sure made its way into the box.

"Quality nutrition can only come from quality food. Quality food is defined as less processed, more natural, more basic foods-like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. Easy stuff to get at the market. There are however, concerns that we are necessarily, having to deal with in this 21st century." ~Leanne Ely

Need a recipe for Pesto or want to learn to make healthier French Fries? How did mom make those mashed potatoes anyway?

Well, Leanne Ely has the answers and had created a cute cookbook filled with over 100 family-approved recipes.

If your kids are hungry for pizza and there isn't a frozen pizza in sight, you might enjoy making the Pizza Muffins. If you keep a bottle of spaghetti sauce around, some mozzarella cheese, various toppings and mixed grain English muffins in the kitchen, you will have an easy-to-prepare snack.

The first thing I noticed in this cookbook was an ingredient called "sucanat." If you are wondering what this is, well, I was too. I found the answer on pg. 51, where the author also lists, kamut flour, carob and whole wheat pastry flour. I was then sent to the glossary for explanations.

The glossary is not where you'd expect it to be, it is on page 59. Ok, so it is that natural cane sugar I've seen in health food stores! All the other ingredients seemed pretty normal to me, still, you might want to find a health food store in your area or most grocery stores seem to have an isle of natural foods. If you want to shop online, there is a resource section at the back of the book.

The basic recipe sections:

Breakfast in Bread and Other Comforts
Soup & Salad Bar
Life in the Fast Food Lane
The Main Thing
Dips, Snacks & Tricks
Just Desserts

Some of the recipes include: Buttermilk Cornbread, Mega Manic Muffin Mix, Lentil Soup, Tabbouleh, Mama's Mashed Potatoes, Quinoa Pilaf, Shepherd's Pie, Roasted Garlic, Pizza, Hummus and Mexican Chicken Salad. Want to try something sweet? Try the Apple Cake or Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting.

Some of the highlights of this cookbook include the short essays on food at the start of the book. Leanne Ely explains why writing this book became essential for the health of her family and how you can also change your food and change your life.

Leanne believes we all know what works best for our bodies. She has been a victim of the experts who have given her ideal diets to follow. Finally, she decided to just follow the "guru" within. She explains the basics of protein, carbohydrates and fats.

Then, she delves into the dangers lurking in our regular grocery store shelves. After reading chapter three, organic foods will start looking pretty darn good to you. Do you have a child who has allergies or want to teach "manners to the not so mannerly." I recently read that the top food allergies are nuts, shellfish/seafood, milk, wheat, eggs, a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, yeast and soya protein. So even "healthy" foods might not be healthy for everyone. It is really tricky. Before she gets into the recipe section, she also explains basic tools and how to stock the pantry.

Before you hand your very young child a peanut butter cookie, consider their age. Peanut butter should not be fed to children younger than 3 years old. It is almost as difficult to avoid peanut butter as it is to avoid cottonseed oil. It seems to be in everything. Even chocolate can have traces of peanuts as can soy protein bars, etc, etc. In fact, by avoiding cottonseed oil, palm kernel oils and peanut butter, you might notice your skin clearing up if you didn't realize you had an allergy to begin with. We all live and learn.

If some of the health information intrigues you, you might also want to read: The Metabolic Plan by Stephen Cherniske. It takes health to new levels! A must-read! It has become more and more obvious to me that to live a long and healthy life, you need to read a lot of books!

Choosing a healthy lifestyle seems to be key and it is really this huge puzzle you have to figure out on your own. You find some pieces in books and some pieces are the result of your own experience with food. Leanne Ely gives quite a few great suggestions on how to not only improve the health of your family, she also gives a basic overview of nutrition so you can feed your family well. There are a few puzzle pieces in this book, pieces I have never seen in any other cookbook.

Leanne's "irreverent" style is cute and you will learn a ton about nutrition and I'm even thinking about using "sucanat" in some of my own recipes.

The DASH Diet for Hypertension Review

The DASH Diet for Hypertension

Why does the DASH diet work?No one knows for certain, although Thomas Moore has his suspicions and offers some suggestions for the reader. Moore,a member of the Harvard Medical School and Boston University faculties, and his co-authors tested the effects of three different diets: 1) the so-called typical American diet; 2) a fruit and vegetable diet; and 3) the DASH diet, and noted that those who ate the DASH diet lost weight, and experienced better blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance readings.

Perhaps eating a combination of foods rich in fiber, magnesium, potassium, and calcium and high in anti-oxidants is part of the answer.Perhaps eating less refined sugar is also a key.Moore provides many suggestions for increasing the fiber in your diet by eating-you guessed it more vegetables and fruits and fewer GASS (grease-alcohol-sugar-salt) items.Moore explains how to approach shopping at the super market, and menus and recipes for employing "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension" or DASH. According to the jacket of Moore's book, The American Heart Association, The National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute, and the American Society for Hypertension approve the DASH diet.

I did not find anything new in this book, but if you aren't familiar with the DASH diet, perhaps you will.
