Grain-free Gourmet Delicious Recipes for Healthy Living Review

Grain-free Gourmet Delicious Recipes for Healthy Living

I have this cookbook as well as Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook, and Eat Well Feel Well. This one is my favorite. I love "The World's Best Meat Sauce", which I make thick as recommended for a sloppy joe spooned over the "Basic Bread" recipe. Fantastic! The apple galette disappeared immediately among a group of non-SCD dieters. I also like the cole slaw, and the cappuccino ice cream is fabulous!

I also have Eat Well Feel Well, but find the recipes are expensive and require ingredients not typical even in the SCD kitchen. Since the SCD can be expensive on its own, I have found that I've used that book very rarely. With the exception of nut flours and standard SCD staples, most ingredients used in Grain Free Gourment are reasonably priced and easily located in your neighborhood supermarket. The recipes even include the standard rather than SCD ingredients, so this book will remain a favorite even if strict adherence to SCD is no longer necessary. Thank you Jodi and Jenny for quality recipes that are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and sure to please even non-SCDers. This is a lovely cookbook with beautiful photos. It would be a welcome addition in every SCD kitchen.

Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition Review

Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Successfully following a gluten-free (GF) diet involves much more than just avoiding gluten. It is about getting optimal nutrition from healthful foods. And it is not all about GF breads and cookies, it's about eating a bounty of whole foods and incorporating healthful whole GF grains, using them in ways that maximize their nutritional benefits.

As a registered dietitian, I refer to Gluten Free Diet on a regular basis; I trust that the information is research-based, backed with science, and 100% reliable. It is the number-one resource on GF diets / GF living for myself and for my clients.

Shelley Case, a registered dietitian who herself follows the GF diet, is an international expert on celiac disease and the GF diet. The book not only covers the GF diet in detail, but common medical questions and issues that arise among folks suffering from celiac disease, or wondering if they might have it. From everyday concerns to more remote issues, all topics are covered in an easy-to-understand prose, complete with useful tables, appendices, and easy recipes.

The book gets updated regularly, so is up to speed on the more controversial issues such as oats (are they GF or not?), hidden sources of gluten in the diet, cross-contamination issues, limiting nutrients and where to find them, whether a "dedicated facility" is important or not and other labeling issues, and great resources for anyone needing support and information on going GF. One of the best sections of the book is Case's well-researched list of GF manufacturers/brands, bakeries, stores, distributors, and web-sites.

If you've been diagnosed with celiac disease orwant to follow a gluten-free diet for any other reason, this is the only book you'll need.

Jenny McCarthy made this book even more famous when she referenced it extensively in her 2008 bestseller, Louder Than Words:"I knew the months ahead would seem like years while I waited for services, so I decided to educate myself on diet interventions. I ordered a book called Special Diets for Special Kids Two. ... The book came in the mail. Special Diets for Special Kids Two. I couldn't wait to read it and fill my eager heart with more knowledge. I was blown away when I read that mothers often noticed that their autistic children were malnourished because they couldn't absorb nutrients from food. ... Could it really be true? Could diet make that much of an impact? ... I found it completely fascinating and exciting that a diet could help. ... I couldn't believe that the gut could correlate to the brain and that what I fed Evan could have a direct link to his behaviors. But I was inspired and willing to give a diet a shot. ... so I made this my new mission."

This cookbook is a breath of fresh air for me and for my family! The recipes are clear, realistic, and uncomplicated. No weird ingredients to chase after. And her flour mixture makes recipes taste "normal."It's been fun to try new things, and my friends have loved making recipes we can all enjoy.

Just as valuable as the recipes are her comments about her experiences and the good humor she brings to daily life as a celiac. She shares just the right balance of honesty and encouragement. The explanations at the front of the book about celiac desease, do's and don'ts, references, etc. are good for synthesizing what I already knew and for sharing with friends and family so they can understand too.Great cookbook!

Happy Celiac Cook

The Aia Gluten and Dairy Free Cook Book Review

The Aia Gluten and Dairy Free Cook Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is basically a collation of user-submitted recipes from a British web forum on the GFCF diet. There are definitely a few useful recipes in there, but they're not consistent--half use American measurements (cups and Tablespoons) and half use British (grams and ounces.) It's not impossible to convert the measurements yourself to whichever one you need, but it is an added step. In addition, there seems to have been very little thought given to culling and selecting the best recipes from the group. There are, for example, three separate "goulash" recipes which vary their measurements and ingredients a bit, but are certainly not different enough to consider each one a new dish. It leads one to believe they were either looking to fill pages or didn't want to offend anyone in this group effort. And, as with most gluten-free cookbooks, there is a large imbalance towards recipes for baked goods. These are important to know how to make, certainly, but this book will not answer the question "what can I serve for dinner?" nearly as well as some of the other GFCF cookbooks available. There is some redemption to be found in the candy-making section of the book, as well as the non-food-items section, both of which provide recipes that cannot easily be found elsewhere, but overall I would say the book is overpriced for the content it provides.

A User Guide to the GF/CF Diet for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and AD/HD Review

I am the grandmother of a wonderful 6-year-old boy who has been diagnosed autistic, and I've read both Luke Jackson's books (written at ages 12 and 13) in order to get a more complete understanding of the condition from a "kids eye view".I can only hope that Luke keeps writing for the masses.
This particular book is a treasure. The reader is treated to Luke's keen powers of observation and unflagging sense of humor, as always. We also get a couple of chapters written by his exceptional mother, Jacqui, who modestly denies being a "superwoman."(I beg to differ.) It's Jacqui who convinced me that if a woman in charge of a household of eight persons can master the art of gluten-free cooking, then the rest of us just might be equal to the task, as well.Last but not least, recipes, menus, and tips on acquiring and organizing necessary equipment are provided in thorough, easy-to-understand detail.
Perhaps all that might not sound exciting to the average person, but I can assure you that this is one of the most interesting and absorbing books ever to address the titled topics.Witness:in the middle of a work week, I began reading the book at about 11:30 p.m. and read it straight through.I couldn't put it down until I finished at nearly 3:00 a.m.
Inspired by Luke's work, I have gone on line to look up more information about gluten-free diets and related topics and have found a wealth of valuable information. However, the language I used to talk my grandson's family into attempting this new lifestyle came straight from the book reviewed here.
An invaluable resource.A "must" read for anyone dealing with a person who on "the autism scale."Thank you and bravo, Luke, Jacqui and Marilyn Le Breton. You have made a very necessary contribution with this publication.

As a parent of a child with a special need -- Global Developmental delays-- we've been searching for over 5 years for options that would help unlockthe key to Emily's potential. This book has done more for us in the past 5months since we've been following the diet than the last 5+ years ofsearching! The areas where we have seen the biggest improvement for ourdaughter has been in the area of verbalization, stabilization and cognitiveskills -- since going on the diet.
3 years ago we were told by aphysician in Utah that Emily should be on a yeast free diet and were giventhe title of a book to follow, but we found the book too complicated tofollow.Feast Without Yeast is easy to ready and easy to follow. We'vemade copies of the allowed & disallowed list from the 4 stagesidentified in the book and distributed them to her teachers, therapists andchild care providers. The guidelines are clear and simple.
The bookgives us good ideas for meals to prepare and we've been able to build onthat and create an environment in our kitchen where most food at ourfingertips is within Emily's guidelines. The way we've begun to look atthis way of eating is that if you just think about all that's availablethat is healthy and without preservatives, you learn to substitute forthings that are no longer allowed. Most grocery stores carry many of theitems in the book. The phasing in from stage 1 to stage 4 made itpossible to ease into the change within her diet, without the huge shock wewould have experienced to just go cold turkey.
I've found the recipesto prepare and very tasty (the cauliflower soup is EXCELLENT! -- 4ingredients!!!)The food that's allowed on her diet is no more difficultto prepare than the food we were serving before -- fast food is pretty muchout, but we're all healthier because of that.Even when going out to eat,we are able to identify things on the restaurant's menu that is included inthe allowed list -- when we are not sure, the restaurants have been willingto supply us with ingredients lists and help us to select items withinEmily's diet.
The pages on my Feast Without Yeast book are bent andcurled due to constant use.I take it with me when I shop and have sharedthe title and contents with many, many people.
I highly recommend thisbook to any parent who has a child with a special need.It gives yousomething that you can take into your own hands to make a HUGE differencein your child's life. It's making a HUGE difference in Emily's life (she's7 years old), and I believe we've only scratched the surface of what'spossible!
