Wow. What a great read. For some background information, I am a registered dietitian and was taught that for the most part, calories in vs. calories out was the way to lose weight. I had been trying this for many years, and was unsuccessful with weight loss. Last year, I was diagnosed with PCOS, which basically stems from being insulin resistant, making it harder for me to maintain a healthy weight. At the beginning of this year, and subsequently my last year in my 20's, I knew I needed to make a change in my health to prevent diabetes and other health concerns and this would be the year to do it.

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. The information is clear and easy to understand, and the book is a fun read with lots of humor. I couldn't believe how much I didn't know about the glycemic index/load and how different foods affect blood sugar differently. I had always assumed that as long as I kept my calories under goal, I would maintain my weight. This book taught me that the types of foods really do matter, but also, that nothing is off limits. I changed my thinking and way of eating. Now, I try to indulge in sweets and higher glycemic items as a treat vs. a daily habit.

I've also experimented with diffferent foods, mainly vegetables and grains that I would have never used. And much to my surprise, I love the taste of bulgur instead of rice, and quinoa as a grain. The recipes in the book are delicious and stuff I would actually make, unlike lots of other nutrition books with not-so-appetizing recipes. And hey, I don't miss those 25 extra pounds I was carrying around either.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to feel their best and take charge of their health.

The Holford Low GL Diet: Lose Fat Fast Using the Revolutionary Fatburner System Review

The Holford Low GL Diet: Lose Fat Fast Using the Revolutionary Fatburner System

I have tried, unsuccessfully, to lose weight for a decade. And when I say I had tried everything, I do mean everything.I eventually simply accepted that I would be a "fat chick" for the rest of my life. That is, until I had a medical and was told I was now officially a Type 2 diabetic.I was horrified! My sister, who had always been thin, had managed to lose her post-pregnancy pot-belly with this book, plus there was the incentive that it claimed to help stabilize blood sugar. With nothing to lose, except hopefully a few pounds, I went ahead and bought the book.Smartest money I ever spent.
The recipes were actually dead easy and absolutely delicious and within a short period of time, I understood the philosophy of what should and shouldn't be on my plate, even when eating out.Within 3 months I had lost 35 pounds! As if that wasn't enough to impress my doctor, blood tests also showed that my blood sugar was back in the normal range!
This is so much more than a 'diet'.It's a lifestyle change, and I found it incredibly easy.Dinner guests have been known to apologize for coming over for dinner and forcing me to break my diet.I smile and tell them that I'm not breaking my diet - everything they've just eaten is part of the Holford plan.None of them can believe I can eat like this and still lose weight!
If you've ever struggled to shed some weight, do yourself a favor. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me and it was easy!I'm still losing weight, I'm healthier and fitter and really feel as though I've been given a new lease on life!

The GL Diet For Dummies Review

The GL Diet For Dummies

I bought this book and "The Big GL + Diet Planner" by Fiona Hunter so I could start getting all the nutrition I possibly can from my food without feeling like I'm missing out on something, and without feeling guilty when eating some of my favorite foods. This diet helps level out your blood sugar levels which if unstable, can cause plenty of ailments-diabetes ofcourse being one of them-but can also cause mood swings and hunger cravings for more of the sugary, high-carb food you just ate!

This diet is more of a "slow" carb diet. The carbs that you eat are more slowly digested and so they sustain energy much longer and your body still has something to restock up on glucose in the muscle. (ok if my science is off a bit, just read the book:)

overall this is a great diet. For those who are on a low-carb diet, beware-this book does have a few places where it talks quite poorly of the Atkins diet, but it does also mention that without the Atkins thought on carbohydrates, nutritionists may have taken a bit longer to getting around to seeing the real effect carbs have on our blood sugar levels and health overall.

simple diet. easy to follow. anyone can do it.

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook (Complete Idiot's Guide to) Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide Glycemic Index Cookbook

I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance, so I jumped right on the Low Glycemic train.I love the Complete Idiot's Guide to 20-minute meals, so I thought this would be the best place to start. The first part of the book has lots of helpful information, and each recipe shows all the nutritional content. The downside is that a lot of the recipes include expensive ingredients or ingredients that I can't find anywhere, such as Hi-Maize and Xylitol and Soy Flour. My only resort would be ordering online. With the 20 min meals book, I could almost always flip it open and find something to make with what I already had in the house.
The fruit recipes are plentiful, but as someone who loves fruit, I can eat tons of it and don't need the bother of cooking it.But for those who find it hard to get in their daily servings, they would probably be great.I also found that many of the recipes involve a lot of meat and though there is a small vegetarian section, those recipes don't look stellar.I would say, if you're a vegetarian, a picky eater or on a budget, maybe just try looking up recipes online.
