I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.

Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

Recently, my mother got married and I was seated at a table with a raw (or living) food advocate. Having heard her story how eating raw cured her husband from arthritis and having tasted a mock strawberry cheesecake made from cashew nuts and cashew nut butter (it was fabulous)...I rushed to buy the book that evening.
I am an extremely visual person, so getting a book that had pictures of the finished recipes was a necessity, as well as getting a book that outlined the raw food principles, fasting and more. To say the least, I was far from disappointed.
The recipes in this book include: burgers, tacos, vegetable chips, pizza, pasta, soups, dips, dressings, salads, smoothies, juices, teas, cheescakes, pies, cookies...and they all look mouth-watering. Even my meat-eating boyfriend likes the look (and taste) of these delightful recipes. The recipes aren't complicated...they just require a little time and effort, which is common of raw living. They do require a dehydrator (you can pick one up for 30 bucks at Sears), a juicer, a blender and a saladacco (a spiral pasta maker for vegetables)...however if you're just starting out like me, you can use your oven at a very low heat with the door open to "dehydrate" foods to get used to it, you can use a cheese grater to make zucchini spaghetti.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in dabbling in raw food...it's extremely tasty, simple recipes and best of all good for you...I mean would you pass up the opportunity to eat "pizza" with a side of vegetable chips and a slice of cheesecake AND it be good for you AND taste delicious? Packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and goodness...Give it a whirl, I promise you won't be disappointed.

In addition, the book introduces readers to the ways that we can transform our physical bodies and our consciousness through a combination of living foods, yoga, meditation, breath work, and much more.

The first third of the book introduces raw cuisine, giving information on nutrition and the benefits of adopting this lifestyle. It connects raw food to other modalities, to enable the whole process of physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation.

The next two thirds of the book features over 300 raw food recipes that are surprisingly diverse and easy to make. These recipes include entrees such as Indian Vegetable Curry and Pad Thai, desserts such as Banana Coconut Cream Pie, and a wide variety of salads, breads, crackers, side dishes, shakes, smoothies, soups, dressings, marinades, dips, and much more. Cooking the Whole Foods Way: Your Complete, Everyday Guide to Healthy Eating Review

Cooking the Whole Foods Way: Your Complete, Everyday Guide to Healthy Eating

This cookbook is the solution for those "health-seekers" who want to eat by the rules (more fiber, more whole grains, less refined sugar, more vegetables). Many of the recipes are delicious, and it's nice to make something that tastes good but that won't give you pangs of food-guilt later.
A few caveats:1. This is not a pure vegetarian cookbook. She has a whole section on fish. The author does not eat fish herself, but wanted to more fully represent the macrobiotic philosophy.2.This doesn't give a good look at the full spectrum of macrobiotics.I'm not an expert by any stretch, but from what I've read of some of the other macrobiotics founders, this seemed very incomplete. She seems to concentrate primarily on the yin-yang principle (in her next book she talks about the elements), but doesn't give a comprehensive overview of how those can affect certain conditions. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, she includes a lot of ingredients most macrobiotics shun (chocolate, garlic, etc.)She seems to bend the rules a lot when it comes to desserts.3.Having said that, when the author thinks a rule is important, she runs with it.Don't even think of eating raw vegetables or fruits, any white flour, or certain vegetables, like tomatoes.
All in all, I thought this cookbook was a valuable addition to my collection, but I didn't think it was a very good lifestyle guideline.

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book (Everything Series) Review

The Everything Raw Food Recipe Book

I have been dabbling here and there with a rawfood lifestyle and I bought a stack of books to get me started. By far this book is the easiest to follow, most colorful, and they have great recipes that have turned out exactly as explained. I made a great recipe out of this book which I took to two potlucks (raw and a normal meat eater) and a lot of people raved about it. From appetizers to salads, burgers, breads, meals, and desserts this is a great source. Also, one final yet critical thing I like that the authors do is tell you exactly how long and the necessary temperature to have things in the dehydrator which is a common mistake I have discovered many people make in books and on youtube - they leave it out. All in all, this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for a new raw foodie or a seasoned raw foodist. Enjoy.

Ani's Raw Food Essentials: Recipes and Techniques for Mastering the Art of Live Food Review

Ani's Raw Food Essentials: Recipes and Techniques for Mastering the Art of Live Food

I have been over 10 years raw and over 10 years macrobiotic before that.During this time I have viewed countless cook books.Ani's Raw Food Essentials is one of the best.By design, it's an impressive book.It has a beautiful layout along with the strength and feel of a high quality text book.It provides detailed instruction for basic raw food staples (salads, soups, smoothies, cereal, wraps, sandwiches, and rolls), comfort food favorites (pizzas, pasta, cheezes, scrambles, pancakes, pies, cakes, cookies, and ice kream), and innovative creations that will leave you and your friend's heads shaking in amazement (tortilla soup with jalapeno-lime kream, Korean dumplings, vanilla and lemon Kream crepes, and scones!!). Whether you are a beginner or advanced student, you will find that it does all these things, and it does them all very, very well.A couple distinguishing factors make her book stand out from all the rest.First, instead of limiting itself to a series of recipes, it provides the theory and concepts behind each of them to a far greater extent than I've seen before.Whether it's the basics of salad dressings, cheezes, soups, pizzas, smoothies, wraps, or deserts, Ani provides detailed instruction that will give you the power to develop your own creations.Second, she incorporates a broader range of ingredients and by doing so lessens the reliance upon high fat seeds and nuts that some people may be concerned about with raw food. You will learn how to utilize fruits, veggies and sprouted grains in places where you may have previously used seeds or nuts.By way of example, her mock tuna salad is made with carrots instead of sunflower seeds, and her onion ring batter is made with a buckwheat base.Of course seeds and nuts are still used in good proportion throughout as they provide essential oils and protein, but you will be pleasantly surprised to learn how to utilize more fruits, veggies and grains in your courses. Finally, there is a most charming 2 page chapter on how to incorporate raw food for our canine friends. In the beginning pages, Ani discusses how this is her version of "Raw Foods 2.0."She is being modest. Her book reaches the next level beyond that.
