The recipes are easy to follow. The food turns out wonderful and still with lots of flavor. Try the breakfast sausage recipe. I was so sorry to have to give up sausage but this is a great alternative!

I got this book from the library to try it and didn't want to give it back. The recipe for faux soy sauce alone makes the book worthwhile--I can eat sushi again! I truly don't understand the first reviewer's complaint that the book had too many recipes from other countries (!) Duh! It's an INTERNATIONAL cookbook! Well, I like international food and am glad I don't have to give that up to eat low sodium. I'm buying this baby and it'll have a place on my shelf for sure.

When a serious heart problem caused Don Gazzaniga to give up his career in communications, he was warned to keep to a diet with very little salt or other sodium. Undaunted, he discovered a way to continue enjoying the meals he loved and still keep his sodium level far below what most cardiologists feel they can expect from their patients.

A great cookbook for anyone!!!Yes, I have high blood pressure & have been diagnosed as 'salt sensitive,' and my husband has had open heart surgery, so we have to be careful, but I have lost 50 pounds without giving up pizza, sticky buns, and chocolate brownies!!!This cookbook enabled me to change my lifestyle without having to redesign my cooking. The recipes in here are easy to make, taste great, and keep you in the mainstream of the food chain even though you are dealing with serious health issues.Don recommends buying a bread machine - who knew store- bought bread had so much sodium!!Anyway, I bought a bread machine , and recipes for the pitas, the breads, the pizza dough - all superb! So many of the heart healthy books do not understand that is not just the fat...many of us have to watch the salt as well. This cookbook guarantees that we do not have to give up the flavor and the fun of food.

This is a low-fat cookbook with the words "low-fat" crossed out and "low-salt" written in in crayon.I need a low-sodium diet because of inner ear problems and I was very disappointed with this book. Consider, for example, these two recipes: "Chicken Enchiladas,"p.112 and "Spinach Lasagna," p 142.The former has 684 mg sodiumper 2-enchilada serving and the latter has 594 mg per serving.Sorry, folks, but this ain't "low-salt."The book does have manylow-salt recipes, but the real focus is low-fat.The authors useconsiderably more space discussing low-fat issues than low-sodium issuesand precious little of the latter.Since you're not going to eatenchiladas and lasagna every night (I hope not!), the average amount ofsodium intake over, say, a week would be lower using these recipes.Thisis fine if your focus is to take good care of your heart, but if you'relike me and you're sensitive to bursts of sodium into your system, thisbook doesn't cut it.

Got this book last week.I am a '77 graduate of the CIA so had GREAT HOPES for this book. The gluten free information is great. The recipes we have tried so far, however, are pretty bad.

Here's what we think about the specific recipes we have tried so far. Remember, our rating is based upon what we have tried.

We are very frustrated that so far we picked two very bad bread recipes.Did this guy test his recipes?I think not.Celiac sufferers need bread recipes. HELLO, are you listening? Please, if you have a great bread recipe would you please post it in your review of this book?My customers are desperate!

1.Soft Rolls - We made these into loaves just as the recipe indicated we could. They turned out to be more like popovers. They are NOT BREAD although they might be good to use for bread pudding. Rating = 0

2.Lean Bread - This is really another large popover. It has a tremendous puff in the oven. You prop open your oven for 5-7 minutes at the end, then you remove the bread at 200ยบ F.After you do that you stand there and watch it deflate.Heart Breaking! It has no business being called BREAD.Thank goodness that I learned my lesson from the Soft Roll recipe last week and only had to throw out three loaves instead of the seven loaves we threw out of that particular recipe.Rating = 0

3.Shortbread- These are heavy and taste like cornmeal cookies. They are not crunchy like a shortbread should be and there is NO WAY anyone could roll this mushy dough out, even if chilled for two hours as suggested. We had to scoop these cookies out and then pat with a sugared tamp. Please pay attention here:these cookies need to be baked THIN. Since you can't roll them out you will have to scoop them onto parchment, butter the bottom of a glass, press it in sugar, then tamp the cookie down to about 1/8" thick.Raspberry jam tasted good.Apricot was not that great. We will try these cookies again only next time we will tamp them down THIN, THIN, THIN!Thise have potential.Rating:4

4.Chocolate Pecan Cookies - The first batch had no flavor so we doubled the vanilla. These are the most cookie like of all the cookies we've made out of this book.We may increase the sugar a bit. These have potential.Rating:4

5.Peanut Butter Cookies - WAY too much salt in this recipe.Thank goodness we decided to halve it.We liked the texture of this cookie but feel they needed some vanilla.Could taste more peanut buttery but vanilla may help that. These are close to being 'there.'Rating 4 1/2

6.Spritz Cookies - This cookie has no business being called a spritz cookie. It is more like a pudding pat with a raspberry center. It puffs up in the oven to look like a cream puff. Then it deflats to look like a flat tire with ridges. Please change the name of this poser cookie to Pudding Pat Cookie.Rating:0

7.Macaroons:Okay, FINALLY the author gets an A+.These cookies were great.Bernie put about 5 ounces of melted semisweet chocolate in half the batter.Mmmm mmmmm. We will make these with other flavors, too.We put dried cherries and pecans in the vanilla ones.Very, very good. Rating:5

Score Average is 2 1/2

Buyer Beware!I you buy this book make sure you do not try a recipe for a special occasion without a making a trial batch first.

As someone who has to really watch her sodium intake, I'm thrilled that this book has turned out to be so great.I own a number of low sodium guidebooks and cookbooks, so I've become very familiar with this category.I've only tried two of the recipes so far, but each was an "out of the park" home run.The first was Just-Like-Mom's Meat Loaf, and, forgive me, Mom, but it was way better. And at 115.8 mg of sodium per serving, it was right in the sodium range that I'm looking for.It was easy to prepare, turned out to be moist with terrific texture, and had a wonderful sweet-spicy sauce. And there was plenty for meat loaf sandwiches, which is one of the best things about meat loaf, the left overs for sandwiches! The second recipe was Tasty Turkey-Stuffed Peppers, and it couldn't have been easier.Even with only one pound of turkey, you'll definitely need very large bell peppers or at least two medium sized peppers. And, again, the left overs were terrific.Another very appreciated feature is that most of the recipes don't call for a ton of ingredients, which make these recipes quick and easy, and best of all, low sodium!

This is a great cookbook. I am an avid cook. My husband's low salt diet seemed like it would be a low taste one - but amazingly using Dick L's recipes has meant we have good food. I haven't even gotten the salt shaker out to flavor up my portions. There are plenty of comfort foods that taste great. The low salt bread machine recipes came out really well - which was a surprise to me since I had always thought salt was a necessity for proper bread. Every recipe I've prepared so far has been excellent. He has includedlittle tricks and ingredients that make you not miss the salt.

If you are newly diagnosed with any kind of illness that necessitates a low salt diet - you need this cookbook. He includes complete nutrition information for every recipe (including sodium and potassium).
