Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special: More Than 275 Recipes for Soups, Stews, Salads, & Extras

Like to cook? I mean, like discovering new seasonings and playing with interesting ingredients? If so, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
Don't be dismayed that the recipes are all soups and salads. Those are very broad categories! Many "salads" are more like casual meals (such as Bean Puree withSeven Savories, which is pretty much a really cool Middle Eastern-stylenachos, using toasted pita wedges instead of tortilla chips, of course). And as for soups... there are SO MANY different recipes here, no matterwhat your idea of soup may be when you open this book, it'll have expandedten-fold after you've perused these pages.
The best part is, soup andsalad are such forgiving mediums, this book is perfect for the home chefwho wants to explore. Helpful text explains unusual ingredients anddescribes why certain vegetables & seasonings were chosen to enhanceflavor and texture in each recipe. At the bottom of every recipe, theMoosewood editors were kind to include a half dozen or so dishes that wouldcompliment it nicely. Makes meal-planning a snap, and so far, they've beenright on target, every time.
I got this book for Christmas and many ofthe recipes have already become "regulars." I have no qualmsabout trying new dishes, even when serving guests, because you can trustthese recipes to need little, if any, tampering. Though I have severalMoosewood cookbooks (and I like them all), I can't recommend THIS bookenough. Really!
Oh yeah, and I wanted to also mention that Moosewood alsoincludes time estimates & nutritional informaton for every recipe.gotta love that.

The New Laurel's Kitchen Review

The New Laurel's Kitchen

I first encountered Laurel, Carol et al. in 1985, after reading and being impressed by Diet For A Small Planet but feeling constrained by the narrowness of protein complementarity as it was then understood. I had beentold by my doctor to lose the fifty pounds I had gained with my firstpregnancy or she wouldn't be around to help me with a second one. Avegetarian friend suggested I try changing the way our family ate. Since Idid then and still do love to cook, I was ready and willing to makewhatever changes might be necessary.Laurel's Kitchen was a light in thedarkness for me.The recipes were fun to make and best of all, they tastedgreat. My formerly meat and potatoes or nothing Irishman husband took toour new way of eating with real enjoyment. I took great heart from thephilosophical musings that began the book and were interspersed with therecipes. When the second edition came out, in 1986, I was fifty poundslighter and beginning a pregnancy as a well-nourished lacto-ovo vegetarian. My 11 pound son's birth left me two pounds lighter than I had been at hisconception.I have gone through 3 copies of the 1986 edition, and havememorized (with our own personal modifications) all our favorite recipes, which have become family classics. I have never regained the weight I lostfourteen years ago and am in my twenty-fifth year of teaching high schoolhistory. My husband and our two teen-agers are healthy, slim andenergetic. My daughter, at 16, takes a lot of static from well-meaning"friends" about her vegetarian diet, but she remains committedbut never censorious of others' eating habits. We are happy with ourchoice and eternally grateful for the wit, wisdom and just plain goodeating to be found in Laurel's Kitchen. As Carol states,"Laurel didn'tbelieve just in cooking vegetarian...it had to taste good."

Product Description:
The New Laurel's Kitchen includes plenty of simple, beat-the-clock recipes - who doesn't need them? But it refuses to blur the distinction between natural foods and fast foods. If you need forty-five minutes to bake a potato or cook brown rice, fine. That's good, solid wind-down time, precious in today's hurried world: time to cut up green beans, or prepare a cauliflower curry; time for the children to dry the lettuce and help make an Appley Bread Pudding. Laurel's kitchen has its own pace - a human pace, that lets other things happen besides just dinner.Good health is the first concern here, and foods that support it are rendered irresistible: dishes like Mushrooms Petaluma, Poppyseed Noodles, Lazy Pirogi, and Sebastapol Pizza. These are well-tested and innately manageable recipes, homespun, but with a generous splash of the sophistication that has swept the food world in recent years.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Entertaining Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Entertaining

I was in the typical - meat, can of soup - maybe some wine, veggies ..mode of crockpot cooking. The food usually came out 'ok', but not rave material.
I was amazed at the variations offered in this book. It's just like cooking a gourmet meal, but p.s. you put it in the crockpot. And trust me - you won't use the recipes just for entertaining - they are too good not to use everyday.
The recipes were so inspiring, I even justified splurging on a new crockpot.

Moosewood Restaurant New Classics Review

Moosewood Restaurant New Classics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is this a "new classic" and what's in this book for the average cook who wants to cook vegetarian food? This heavy tome is packed with useful recipes and is all over the map, both ethnically and in types of recipes. As other Moosewood cookbooks, this is a vegetarian cookbook, but with asides into fish, which I don't mind--being one who limits meat but has not problem eating it. Some people do view fish as living creatures, which, of course, they certainly are.
What's also new here compared to the dairy-laden earlier books is a venture into a few vegan recipes that leave out all milk, egg and other animal-source product, including a recipe for very useful mock sour cream. So there's a little something for everyone, vegetarian, limited vegetarian and even vegan. The recipes tend to the family-style rather than super-gourmet.
One of the most useful recipes for me is a vegetable broth. This is a very good recipe base all kinds of soups. I despise the taste of canned broths and it's a nuisance to make chicken stock from scratch. Vegetable stock freezes well and this recipe makes a particularly flavorful version, using carrots, onions, celery, potatoes and garlic. The potatoes, in particular add consistency to the broth. The recipe offers either sweet potato or carrot for that sweet-spicy element and the sweet potato version also adds body to the broth. There is a version for mock-chicken broth, and an Asian ginger flavored broth base as well.
Italian dishes dominate the recipes, lots of pasta sauces, including a vegetarian kind of Bolognese (meat gravy), a good basic tomato sauce, frittatas, risottos and cioppino fish stew. There are also plenty of diversions into novelties such as an interesting peach salsa.
The breads lean more to biscuits and cornbread than to yeast breads and the dessert section is loaded with cookies. There are also sections on sandwiches, wraps and mock burgers.
In summary, this is a very good vegetarian-based home cooking book, maybe something like Joy of Cooking - Veggie-Style.In that respect, this is a new classic, and certainly found a welcome home on my cooking bookshelf.

I have more slow cooker cookbooks and recipe booklets than I can count. This one is by far the best. I found it at the library, had to buy my own copy, and now I've given it as gifts to everyone I know. The recipes don't use processed foods, there are suggestions for variations, many recipes can be made without meat, and they are just plain delicious! Quite a few of the recipes have quickly become family favorites.

The Pressure Cooker Cookbook Revised Review

The Pressure Cooker Cookbook Revised

If you've just purchased your first modern pressure cooker, this is a great cookbook to teach you the basics of pressure cooking. The recipes are solid, easy to prepare, and don't require a lot of unusal ingredients. The Lentil Soup is one of our favorites. That said, we sometimes feel that the recipes are a little too simple -- the dishes come out tasting similar to something we could have prepared on our own (granted, the pressure cooker makes it much faster, which was the point, wasn't it?)We purchased this book with The Pressure Cooker Gourmet (by Victoria Wise) and we've found Wise's recipes to be much more, well, gourmet.Of course, with the enhanced flavor come trips to the supermarket hunting for strange ingredients and longer prep times. We end up using both books about an equal amount -- The Pressure Cooker Cookbook for something straightforward to prepare and home-cooked tasting, and The Pressure Cooker Gourmet for dishes we never could have prepared before that are well worth the extra work.

The Pressure Cooker Gourmet: 225 Recipes for Great-Tasting, Long-Simmered Flavors in Just Minutes Review

The Pressure Cooker Gourmet: 225 Recipes for Great-Tasting, Long-Simmered Flavors in Just Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The pressure cooker is making a comeback after years of disfavor. The old jiggle top units that could be opened and could cause severe burns are pretty much a thing of the past.Coincidentally, as people have less time to spend in the kitchen, the pressure cooker has come back to center stage. For people still a little leery of using one, this book will allay your fears. Victoria Wise discusses thoroughly the hows, the do's and dont's and generally instructs the reader in the proper and successful use of this versatile appliance.
The Pressure Cooker Gourmet includes recipes for soups, meat, poultry, fish, grains, vegetables, legumes, sauces and of course desserts.Although there are photographs of the finished recipes, the reader will delight in the many tips, subtitutions and suggestions that accompany many of the recipes. You will also appreciate the index of recipes with page numbers, that appear at the beginning of each chapter.
Being a poultry fan, I loved the Coq au Vin.The wine sauce was thicker than I ever remember from another method and the blend of herbs and spices was intensified by the increased pressure.
And if you can't resist a moist and rich cheesecake, try the Cheesecake with Mascarpone Cheese in Chocolate Cookie Crust.I had never tried Mascarpone (a very creamy cream cheese) and it, combined with the moist heat of a pressure cooker, was sinfully delicious.
I'm still experimenting with the recipes and there are a lot of them!It takes some 'old time' recipes and applies 21st century flavors and technology to help rekindle our culinary past.As you might imagine, I love this book and you will too!Buy it!!

The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life Review

The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to start by saying I consider myself a pretty fine cook...we are a two chef household with strong culinary backgrounds. It's hard to impress me with new info.I'm also a weight loss coach...balance! Yin Yang!

Yet thisbook is very different than my other cookbooks. I actually read it cover-to-cover the day I got it. It's not just recipes. If you are totally new at learning how to cook healthy dishes, you will feel as though you've just had a crash course.Better yet, if you attended culinary school I swear there is enough "teach an old dog new tricks" info in here to continue learning...at least there was for us.While I already knew things like using pumpkin or applesauce in place of fat in cakes (it makes a spice cake BETTER and MOISTER and pumpkin is high fiber, high water, low glycemic so it takes as many calories as are in pumpkin to digest it so it's an amazing fat replacement in baked goods), I learned scores of new things...I now stock my cupboard, for example, with oat flour. After using it in her cake recipe I was floored.I have also been trying to create a low calorie and low fat hummus (yet yummy) for ages with no tahini. She beat me to it. I also hate the taste of low fat or no fat sour cream and her greek yogurt and lemon juice trick in the recipes has changed my Southwest dishes for good. The substitutions really do change your mind and the book is just as much about teaching the reader a lifestyle more than handing them some recipes.

That said, I wasn't happy not to find nutritional information in the book. Granted, I get the reasoning behind it since I read Bethenny's first book (if you didn't, you'll also get a good overview of it in here) and her mindset against dieting but, instead, enjoying good healthy food in moderation...however, statistically most of us eat 40% more calories than we think we do. For those of us who don't mind journaling our calories or who actually feel empowered by it, I hope that she adds a link to a website in which she lists them. This way, she takes away the obsession she is against in the caloric "food noise" in the book, but also allows those of us in control of our calories in vs. calories out to go that extra mile to get the info if we are gonna plug it in on the computer anyway...

...and that's exactly what I did this morning.I have been cooking from this book for days and I kid you not, I became convinced that the calorie count was left out because the food was TOO good and she had to be fooling us into thinking it was healthy. If you make the cake called "How Is This So Moist Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Glaze" as I did this morning, you'll understand. This is actually 1000% better than my fattest chocolate cake recipe laden with calories. I mean it is mind blowing good. And very filling. So I was positive I had to have eaten about 700 calories this morning until I actually plugged in the full recipe and included the peanut butter glaze (it makes more than enough glaze; you'll even have some leftover) and discovered the cake and pb glaze was just 150 calories/ serving. It is incredibly great without the peanut butter glaze too so I'm guessing that omission would even bring it down to 100 calories for something that tastes uber fattening and isn't! This recipe alone was worth the price of the book. In fact, Bethenny, the author, noted in the notes about this that the first time she made it she accused Jason, (her husband- according-to-the-front-page-news-as-of-yesterday), of throwing a stick of butter in it while she wasn't looking.I have no idea either how these ingredients make something that rich and low calorie but it's my new fave. I began plugging in the dishes I had made into my nutrional info converter and all were high in health and all natural, low in calories, low in fat, many high fiber...she should include the stats. It's a selling point, not a negative.

Try the lychee martini or skinnygirl cosmo (great tips on keeping drinks low cal!)
Try the guilt-free artichoke spinach cheese dip.
Pad Thai
Pasta Carbonara
Lasagna
Chicken Wings
Baked Ziti
Cranberry Almond Chicken Salad
Kettle Corn
Spicy Chipotle Dip
Quacamole
The pasta with the mushroom sauce using truffle oil is good enough to serve at a dinner party. We fell over ourselves eating that one two days straight in my house
Goat Cheese Dip
Spanish Spiced Rubbed Chicken with Mustard Green Onion Sauce
Red Velvet Cupcakes

You get the idea. What's unique is she lists scores of substitutions with each recipe so you really get the idea how to use what you have, transform a dish, make it go further, or how to pick up substituting low fat and low calorie ingredients in all your other dishes in ways you might not think of.

Also, I add non-fat greek yogurt to her excellent hummus recipe and it makes it super creamy and even higher in protein.

Better yet, while most of my diet cookbooks use substitutions that make a dish a tad more artificial, these are all natural and that always boosts taste.

Know going in: There are no photos in the book. While that never bugs me, I also know it does bug some people and it may be important to you. Also I wish the pages had been glossy (easier to wipe clean) rather than the school-book style novel paper which also made the ingredient list hard to read since it was in a lighter grey.I did need my reading glasses because of that. I think it may have been fine if the font was bigger and maybe they made the font smaller to keep the book at 300 pages which is one of the cut-off points for books, but, if so, I wish when they'd decreased the size, they'd changed the color to black like the rest of the recipe.

Conclusion: In my perfect world, the pages and binding and font color would be more like a cookbook than a novel but I read it like a novel since it's full of information. The dishes, and I mean every dish I've made from it, has been 5 star and we never feel deprived cooking easy dishes with everyday ingredeints we have at home or can substitute with her suggestions. If nothing else, taste that dang addictive and decadent chocolate cake with peanut butter glaze. So I forgave throwing on my reading glasses after I tasted the dishes. Now get that nutritional info on a website somewhere and I'll be eternally grateful--That said, I still love it.
