Miami Spice: The New Florida Cuisine Review

I bought the book for the cover. I read several cookbooks a year. When I first read Miami Spice I was interested in what was going on with fusion/world cuisine on the South East Coast. The book proved to be a loadstone of information, recipes, and best of all, love for the cuisine that Steven Raichlen ate, cooked and reviewed. This love is what makes the book so important for anyone interested in the culinary movements of the last ten years in the South East.
I have cooked my way through most of the book, stolen a few recipes and adapted as my own, and heartily recommend it to anyone who loves to cook. This is a book for people who enjoy a great read. Really. It is well written and the recipes work.

Menus and Memories from Punjab: Meals to Nourish Body and Soul (Hippocrene Cookbooks) Review

Menus and Memories from Punjab: Meals to Nourish Body and Soul

Just received my copy of "Menus" and couldn't put it down.Read right through Rani's entire memoir as told in conjunction with tempting new-to-me recipes. But this is more than a cookbook. It is the gripping lifestory of a beautiful, innocent American/Irish/Hungarian girl who goes off with her baby son to live with the family of her Sikh husband in rural Punjab, India in the mid-1960s.Learning to cope with the clash of cultures and deeply immersed in the forefront of the Easternization of the Western world movement (still so revalent today), Rani shares her wisdom garnered through a lifetime of travails. In dealing with devastating loss, she shows how to stay in the present, the here and now, that comes from nourishing meals for the heart and tummy. As she says, "A healthy body is integrl to a balanced spiritual life," and vice versa.
Now, I'm off with my shopping list of new ingredients needed to satisfy my much anticiipated new taste delights, like Kewrda flavor, fenugreek leaves, rose syrup and the wonderful cardamom spices and lots of other goodies.

I was hoping for more on the spice and less on the herbs. In any case, if you want more on the herb side, give it an extra star.

The Spice Kitchen: Everyday Cooking with Organic Spices Review

The Spice Kitchen: Everyday Cooking with Organic Spices

The Spice Kitchen is a good introduction to the use of spice for those who have been timid of doing so. An apt description from the back cover is that thisbook is "a fresh new way to make everyday foods more delicious...."
Hence, most of the recipes consist of an already-familiar dish that has been jazzed up with the addition of one or few spices. I find this to be a good approach for those who are inexperienced in using spices. The chance of success is high, compared to something like a complex Indian curry. It also allows the novice to clearly taste the effect of the spice.

Some dishes that illustrate this approach include:
Curried Deviled Eggs with cumin, coriander and turmeric.
Popcorn spiced with Creole seasoning.
Caramel corn with cloves.
Cheeseburgers with ancho chile and lemon zest.
Potato salad with fennel seed and dill weed.

While there are a few recipes that include a more complex blend of spices (Jamaica Jerk Chicken, Tandoori Chicken Skewers with Curry Butter sauce), most recipes are fairly simple. For this reason, cooks already experienced with the use of spices will probably find this book a bit lacking.

The ultimate goal of this book was to provide ways to spice up simple daily home cooking, and it meets that goal. The book is also visually appealing and well-written. Combined with a rack of spices, it would make a good gift for less experienced cooks.
