This book is not just a cookbook, but more of a celebration of life in the Lowcountry. There are inserts of history, such as the Swamp Fox and General Oglethorpe's victory over the Spanish in 1742. Chapters tell of the rice plantations, the Gullah, and the mystique of the Lowcountry. Included is Carolina Gold, the West African connection, historic Charleston, Savannah, and Beaufort. Recipes included are: Lowcountry beverages, hors d'oeuvres, seafood, rice, soups, stews, and gumbos, benne seeds, peanuts, pork, chicken, vegetables, corn and spoon bread, grits, wild game, and desserts.
There is a dictionary of Charltonese (bare=a beverage made from barley and hops, flow=what you stand on, true="he true the ball").
Joe Dabney, who is a James Beard Cookbook of the Year winner brings a volume of recipes and stories. There is an equal amount of both. It is a trip to the Lowcountry.

About a year ago when Ron Douglas released America's Most Wanted Recipes, I grabbed it and was giddy with excitement at all of the "famous" dishes I could now make. I love to cook - and eat - so I spent the past year trying many of the recipes.

Now, here he is again with MORE America's Most Wanted Recipes!

Ron, Ron, Ron! You're going to make me get fatter!

Just a quick glance inside this book tells me I will have another fun year cooking some of my all time favorite dishes from some of my favorite restaurants!

One thing I like that Ron did was tell you about what you pay to make these recipes at home so you can see the money saved vs. eating out.

If I were to wish for one thing inside this book would be for some nutritional information. But, on the other hand, I never ask for it when I visit these restaurants.

If you like eating out but hate the cost, if you like to cook, I highly recommend you grab this book today.

I found that the book was a great investment for people who might not have the funds or the patience to be at the restaurants all the time to have great food. Everything that I've made has been excellent, and though I'msure that the author tried to find the closest ingredients that could befound with ease at your local market (and in comments to the people whogave a bad review that he couldn't find the ingredients out of the country,we're lucky someone has found a way for us to make the recipes at ALL!How's he supposed to know you can't get Mayo where you are and whatsubstitution you could use in its place? ) Also to the person who made thecomment about it not being "gourmet fare" the recipes that are inthe book aren't supposed to all be gourmet fare, they're supposed to berecipes most people LOVE & it wasn't like you couldn't look over thebook and judge if it was for you before you bought it! I LOVE this book, and it looks like everyone else does too! Great Job Todd! THANKS!
