(More customer reviews)While the book's "history" of the sacrament of Communion - which is commonly and more meaningfully called the "Breaking of the Bread" or the "Lord's Supper" - is superfluous to the actual bread recipes contained in the book, and is heavily denominational and liturgical in its bias, it serves to show that the various assemblies and churches over the centuries have lost their focus on the REASON for the sacrament, instead choosing to foucs on the METHOD and the OBJECT.

Whatever the author's true intent in the telling of the "history", the final point made in the book's introductory chapters is all that can really be taken away in any spiritual sense: "We ought not to make the elements something 'special' - it is not the substance - but the presence of the Lord".

The questionable theological intent of the book notwithstanding, the bread recipes - recipes from various cultures and peoples - are themselves quite good, and as deserving of a place on your family table as on the table of the Lord's Supper.
